VOICED AT:
INTRO: Congo-Kinshasa's foreign minister, Yerodia
Ndombasi, said today (Friday) that his nation has no
intention of entering the new century as an occupied
country. V-O-A Correspondent Breck Ardery reports
from the United Nations.
TEXT: Speaking to the U-N summit of world leaders,
Mr. Ndombasi said his country has been invaded and
occupied by foreign powers for the last two years. He
said the situation is a clear violation of the
principle of national sovereignty and the charter of
the United Nations.
Speaking through an English interpreter, Congo's
foreign minister said international toleration of an
invasion of his country sets a dangerous precedent.
/// Interpreter Act ///
They come across our borders and challenge our
national sovereignty and they seek to grab our
national wealth and this does not apply just to
our country. With this new race of "huns"
(barbarians) this is the sort of thing that
could happen in your country too.
/// End Act ///
Mr. Ndombasi said Congo President Laurent Kabila could
not attend the U-N summit because he is occupied with
the business of war.
The U-N Security Council has authorized a peacekeeping
force for Congo but it has yet to be deployed because
of cease-fire violations and what some diplomats say
is a lack of cooperation from President Kabila.
The conflict in Congo is very complex, featuring
President Kabila's government against several rebel
groups that are backed by troops from Burundi, Uganda
and Rwanda. (Signed)
