///// DROPS WORD THREE FROM TEXT GRAF1 OF 2-266197. /////
INTRO: The U-N High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadako
Ogata is calling for the Indonesian government to
crack down on militia groups in West Timor.
Correspondent Breck Ardery reports Ms. Ogata was
reacting to the killings of three U-N refugee workers
in West Timor.
TEXT: Ms. Ogata recounted for reporters the attack by
rampaging militia members who killed workers at
a refugee center in West Timor, part of Indonesia.
The United Nations has been attempting to register the
refugees and determine if they wish to return to East
Timor.
The militia groups oppose independence for East Timor
and have repeatedly harassed and intimidated the
refugees and aid workers.
Ms. Ogata said the killing of the U-N workers, who
were citizens of Croatia, Ethiopia, and the United
States, caused her to evacuate her staff from West
Timor. She said it is time for the government of
Indonesia to crack down on the militias.
/// OGATA ACT ///
I think what I would like to insist is that the
President and the government of Indonesia really
implement concrete security measures to separate
the armed elements and let the refugees return
or go elsewhere.
/// END ACT ///
The attack on the West Timor refugee center occurred
as more than 150 world leaders were preparing to open
the Millennium Summit meeting at U-N headquarters in
New York.
U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan met with Indonesia's
President Abdurrahman Wahid who expressed concern
about the attack, and pledged to immediately beef up
security. Mr. Wahid said he has ordered two more
battalions of Indonesian soldiers to the Atambua area
of West Timor where the killings took place.
