UN/Indonesia arrangement on border committee approved in East Timor
5 September -- The Cabinet of the East Timor Transitional Administration has approved an arrangement reached by the United Nations peacekeeping mission and the Government of Indonesia on the establishment of a committee to deal with border issues between East and West Timor.
In a statement released in Dili, the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) said that the arrangement, which was approved yesterday, had been negotiated over recent months with Indonesia, and was expected to be signed shortly by the head of mission, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and Indonesian authorities.
According to UNTAET, the arrangement to establish a Joint Border Committee creates a legal framework within which issues of mutual concern related to the East/West Timor border can be dealt with in a "structured, coherent and transparent fashion." It will also help remove the risk of cross-border misunderstandings on sensitive issues such as security, demarcation and police cooperation, while encouraging closer bilateral ties through collaboration on environmental, health and veterinary issues, the statement said.
