General Dynamics Wins $31 Million Contract to Develop Digital Fire Control System for the Towed Artillery Digitization Program

BURLINGTON, Vt. – General Dynamics Armament Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has been awarded a $30.6 million contract by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps to develop a digital fire control system solution for the XM777 155mm lightweight howitzer as part of the Towed Artillery Digitization program.

The program is slated to start in October 2000 and run through October 2003. The contract will be for work done under the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase of the program. The selection of General Dynamics positions the company within a production program that has a potential value of $195 million. Under the EMD phase, General Dynamics Armament Systems will develop, fabricate, and integrate 13 digital fire control systems onto the XM777. In addition, General Dynamics Armament Systems will test and document the systems, along with six modification kits and three computer-based trainers, to meet government requirements.

"In providing the winning solution for this program, we integrated capabilities from all across General Dynamics to build a team that will meet the needs of our customer," General Dynamics Armament Systems President Linda Hudson said. General Dynamics Armament Systems, as prime contractor, leads this team, which includes Computing Devices Canada, Ltd. (a General Dynamics company), and General Dynamics Defense Systems.

The digital fire control system will provide on-board fire control computation, position navigation and location, gun pointing and information display for the XM777 and potentially other towed weapon and indirect fire weapon platforms. The system must accurately determine weapon position and orientation, calculate and display ballistic firing solutions, maintain ammunition status, unit locations and fire support coordination measures, navigate, and communicate digitally on the fire support and situational awareness networks.

General Dynamics, headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia, employs approximately 44,000 people worldwide and has annualized sales of approximately $10 billion. The company has leading market positions in business aviation, information systems, shipbuilding and marine systems, and land and amphibious combat systems.
