U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
DAILY PRESS BRIEFING
Briefer: Philip T. Reeker, Deputy Spokesman
MONDAY, AUGUST 28, 2000, 1:45 P.M.
(ON THE RECORD UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED)
QUESTION: I wanted to ask, the fears of Belgrade possibly
intervening in Montenegro, have they reached a sort of higher
level that something might happen in the coming days or weeks?
And are you aware of a report in the London Times this morning
that an aircraft carrier had to cancel an exercise in the region?
I don't have more details than that about this.
MR. REEKER: I am afraid I am not even aware of that report. I'm
sorry, I don't have anything further. I think our position on
Montenegro is well known. Our support for democratic forces
there, and the fact that NATO, and certainly the United States,
watches very carefully developments there, and any threat to the
security of the region would be viewed with extreme concern.
(The briefing was concluded at 2:40 P.M.)
