U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
August 25, 2000
STATEMENT BY PHILIP T. REEKER, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN
REPORTS OF CONTINUED AERIAL BOMBINGS OF CIVILIAN TARGETS
IN SOUTHERN SUDAN
We have followed with great concern recent reports of the Government
of Sudan's renewed bombing of civilian targets in southern Sudan. The
targets of these bombings have included several towns in the Eastern
Equatorial region where international relief organizations are
operating, including those under the U.N.-led Operation Lifeline
Sudan. These attacks contradict the Sudanese President's April 19
statement that he would end the bombing of civilian targets in the
south, and violate the spirit of a pledge to United Nations
Secretary-General Kofi Annan that the government will ensure the
safety of relief operations.
The United States condemns these and all Government of Sudan attacks
against civilian targets. These attacks have no military purpose.
Endangering the international humanitarian relief effort increases the
risk of starvation for tens of thousands of Sudanese noncombatants.
The United States again calls upon the Government of Sudan to halt
immediately these bombings and cease any activities which harm
civilians or interfere with relief operations in Sudan.
