INTRO: The United Nations Security Council today
(Wednesday) issued another call for an end to the
fighting in Afghanistan. VOA Correspondent Breck
Ardery reports from the United Nations.
TEXT: After receiving a briefing on recent
developments in Afghanistan, the Council has
reiterated its call for all parties to the conflict,
particularly the Taleban, to end the fighting and
resume negotiations.
In a formal statement, Council President Agam Hasmy of
Malaysia said there is a danger the Afghan conflict
will spread.
/// HASMY ACT ///
There is a real danger that Afghan territory is
being used as a base to destabilize other
countries in the region. We are disturbed by
incidents involving the entry of extremists and
terrorists from the territory of Afghanistan
into the territories of three Central Asian
states.
/// END ACT ///
Those three nations are Iran, Tajikistan and
Uzbekistan.
The Security Council also urged the Taleban to remove
restrictions imposed on humanitarian workers in
Afghanistan. The Taleban has recently imposed sharp
limits on the types of work that women may do.
Council members also said they are disturbed by what
they call an "alarming" increase in the production and
trafficking of illegal drugs in and from Afghanistan.
