Ending strife in DR of Congo to top agenda of UN envoy's talks in region
21 August -- The need to end fighting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and ensure unhindered operation of the United Nations mission in the country will be among the key issues discussed by Secretary-General Kofi Annan's envoy as he begins his visit to the sub-region, a UN spokesman said today in New York.

On the first leg of his itinerary, the Secretary-General's newly appointed Special Envoy for the DRC, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, was heading today for Zambia for talks with President Frederick Chiluba, spokesman Fred Eckhard said. Tomorrow, General Abubakar is scheduled to travel to Kinshasa for meetings with DRC President Laurent Kabila and other senior officials.

General Abubakar, a former head of State of Nigeria, was appointed by Mr. Annan last week in part to discuss with the DRC Government issues pertaining to the Lusaka Agreement and relevant Security Council resolutions. These issues include a cessation of hostilities, the granting of the full freedom of movement to the UN Mission to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC), and full participation in the inter-Congolese dialogue and cooperation with the facilitation process. General Abubakar was also requested to take up the issue of an apparent propaganda campaign that has been conducted against MONUC and its staff.
