Concerned over bombings in Sudan, Security Council requests briefing
10 August -- Concerned over the recent escalation in violence
in Sudan, members of the Security Council today requested a briefing on
the country's security and humanitarian situation.
Following closed-door consultations of the Council, its President, Ambassador Agam Hasmy of Malaysia, told journalists in New York that the Council shared the concern expressed by Secretary-General Kofi Annan earlier this week over repeated bombings near relief facilities in the southern Bahr-El-Ghazal region.
On Tuesday, Mr. Annan had announced the temporary suspension of relief flights to the area pending a security assessment through a statement released by his spokesman.
