DoD News Briefing

Tuesday, August 15, 2000 - 1:35 p.m. EDT

Rear Adm. Craig Quigley, DASD PA

Q: The assessment team in Africa for possible peacekeeping force in Sierra Leone, where does that stand?

Quigley: They left Nigeria and Ghana on Sunday and returned to their home stations in Europe.

They're in the process of preparing their report. Has not been completed yet, but it would be prepared by the members that actually went; presented then to the CINC over there in European Command, also discussed with the governments of Ghana and Nigeria before any public release of the recommendations was done. But the team did indeed leave on Sunday.

Q: Is there a time sensitivity to get it done quickly, or is it more of a protracted, methodical operation?

Quigley: I'd probably put it somewhere between the two. I think we're going to want to -- there's a sense of this is a process that needs to move along fairly smartly, but it also needs to be done correctly. So I guess we'd try to split the difference there.
