UN succeeding in efforts to integrate Bosnian police force, Security Council told
15 August -- Efforts by the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) to integrate the country's police forces are meeting with success, the UN's top peacekeeping official informed the Security Council this morning.

"In the Federation, Croat and Bosniac officers started to cooperate in the formerly divided Mostar police in carrying out the joint investigation and subsequent arrest of a group producing counterfeit passports," Bernard Miyet, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, told the Council as it held an extensive debate on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and UNMIBH's work there. Mr. Miyet said that since the Joint Entity Task Forces on Illegal Immigration and Organized Crime were established in June, the police had cooperated to break up a group involved in drug smuggling and the production of counterfeit Deutschmarks.

In addition, he said, the recent inauguration of the State Border Service entry point at the Sarajevo airport had enabled the authorities and UNMIBH to gather reliable data on movements through that airport and its apparent organized use as a point of entry for illegal migration into Europe.

Commenting on the general political situation, Mr. Miyet stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to the problems in the Balkans. "What we will have to do in Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot be seen in isolation from what happens in the region," he said. "It is evident to everyone that the situation and the developments in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia have a real impact on the pace of the reform and the constitution of the Bosnian State and these might, I would say, facilitate or create hurdles."
