INTRO: The United Nations has decided to resume relief
flights to the African nation of Sudan after the
Sudanese government offered security assurances. VOA
Correspondent Breck Ardery reports from the United
Nations.
TEXT: The humanitarian relief flights were suspended
last week after Sudanese warplanes bombed rebel areas
in the south of the country, narrowly missing a U-N
relief plane that was parked on an airstrip.
But U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan says he has now
received assurances from the government of Sudan that
it will take measures to ensure the safety of
humanitarian workers. Mr. Annan's spokesman, Manoel de
Almeida e Silva, says the Secretary-General takes
those assurances at face value.
///ALMEIDA E SILVA ACT///
The Secretary-General trusts that the government
of Sudan and other parties to the conflict will
continue fully their commitment to ensure the
safety and security of relief workers and also
the vulnerable populations whose urgent needs U-
N humanitarian personnel are trying to address
throughout the country.
///end act///
The combination of civil war and drought has put
millions of Sudanese at risk and U-N officials were
worried that a prolonged suspension of the relief
flights would bring even more misery. The conflict in
Sudan involves the Islamic government in the north
against largely Christian rebels in the southern part
of the country. (Signed)
