UN officials report harassment of rebel sympathizers in Sierra Leone
15 August -- United Nations human rights staff in Sierra Leone have reported harassment incidents against civilians suspected of having links with the rebel group, Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a UN spokesman said today in New York.

Briefing the press at UN Headquarters, spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva said that human rights officers from the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) traveled to the town of Bo and its vicinity where they confirmed reports of Civilian Defence Force (CDF) harassment of civilian population suspected of having belonged to, or been sympathetic to, the RUF.

According to the spokesman, the officers are scheduled to meet with the CDF leadership later this week in an effort to put a stop to this type of behaviour.

In other developments, UNAMSIL has reported that the four Mi24 attack helicopters it received from the Government of Russia are now operational.
