INTRO: India's Prime Minister has warned Pakistan not
to use force to resolve the dispute over the territory
of Kashmir - saying Kashmir is an integral part of
India. V-O-A's Jim Teeple reports India's prime
minister made his comments during a speech marking
India's 53rd anniversary of independence from Great
Britain.
TEXT: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee says the
Kashmir dispute must be solved. However, he says
India will not talk with Pakistan unless Islamabad
stops what he describes as "cross-border terrorism" in
Indian-administered Kashmir.
// HINDI ACTUALITY, IN AND UNDER //
Mr. Vajpayee says Pakistan will be making a mistake if
it thinks it can solve the Kashmir dispute through
violence. He accuses Islamabad of pressuring the
largest separatist militant group in Kashmir to end a
brief cease-fire with Indian security forces.
Mr. Vajpayee says India will not allow its borders
with Pakistan to be re-drawn either through force or
religion. Pakistan denies offering separatists in
Kashmir anything other than moral and diplomatic
support.
India's prime minister made his remarks at Old Delhi's
historic Red Fort, under extremely tight security.
There have been daily bombings and clashes between
Indian security forces and separatist militants in
Kashmir, leading up to India's Independence Day
observances. (Signed)
