INTRO: The United Nations Security Council today
(Monday) approved a resolution to establish a special
court to try war crimes in Sierra Leone. VOA
Correspondent Breck Ardery reports from the United
Nations.
TEXT: With no debate, the Council unanimously approved
the establishment of a court that will have members
from both Sierra Leone and the international
community.
The resolution directs U-N Secretary-General Kofi
Annan to meet with officials in Sierra Leone to work
out details for the court and report back to the
Security Council within 30 days.
Mr. Annan will also identify an alternate host nation
if, for security reasons, it is deemed unwise to hold
the trials in Sierra Leone. The government of Sierra
Leone has given its full support to the idea of the
U-N-initiated court.
Rebel leader Foday Sankoh and other members of his
Revolutionary United Front are accused of a variety of
crimes against humanity. The Security Council
resolution says trials will contribute to the process
of national reconciliation in Sierra Leone.(Signed)
