INTRO: The United States and Italy are urging the
opposition in Yugoslavia to take part in next month's
presidential and parliamentary elections and unite
behind a single candidate. Correspondent Nick Simeone
reports the foreign ministers from both countries met
in Rome Tuesday with Montenegrin President Milo
Djukanovic who may be ready to reconsider a boycott of
the vote.
TEXT: President Djukanovic has been urging
Montenegrins to stay away from next month's elections
because of questions about their legitimacy.
But in Rome for a meeting with the Montenegrin leader,
Secretary Albright encouraged Yugoslavia's divided
opposition to take part in the vote, even if it turns
out to be rigged by President Slobodan Milosevic.
/// ALBRIGHT ACT ///
I do think that it is very important for the
democratic opposition in Serbia to unite and to
present a single slate and to participate in the
elections. They have an opportunity to do that
and they need to unite on a single candidate.
/// END ACT ///
President Djukanovic is not a candidate. But U-S
officials say the Montenegrin leader realizes he could
be Belgrade's strongest opponent because of his
position as an elected, pro-Western leader within the
Yugoslav federation. (SIGNED)
