27 July -- Senior officials from the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) were en route to Lusaka today to attend a meeting of defence and foreign ministers of the signatories of the Lusaka peace accord, a UN spokesman said in New York.
Kamel Morjane, the Secretary-General's Special Representative to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), together with Major-General Mountaga Diallo, MONUC's Force Commander, will take part in the meeting of the accord's Political Committee that is scheduled to start tomorrow, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, following the Security Council's latest resolution on the DRC, an assessment team led by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) is preparing to leave for Kisangani in the middle of next month to assess the loss of life and damage caused by the recent fighting in that city, according to the spokesman.
