UN planning team concludes mission to Eritrea and Ethiopia
17 July -- A report containing a concept of operation for a prospective United Nations peacekeeping mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia is expected to go to the Security Council some time next week, a UN spokesman said today in New York.

Spokesman Fred Eckhard told a press briefing at UN Headquarters that a UN planning team had just concluded its mission to the region. Major General Timothy Ford of Australia, who led the team, was in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today where he briefed the head of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Salim A. Salim, on the results of the mission. Mr. Eckhard said that the report detailing the concept for the peacekeeping operation would be submitted to the Council following consultations with Ethiopian and Eritrean officials and representatives from the OAU.

Meanwhile, the first four military liaison officers -- two each in Asmara and in Addis Ababa -- were expected to arrive in those two capitals this week to assist in the planning of the mission, the spokesman said.
