VOICED AT:
INTRO: United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan
said today (Monday) that border violations in south
Lebanon have ended and U-N peacekeepers will soon move
into the area. VOA Correspondent Breck Ardery reports
from the United Nations.
TEXT: Arriving at U-N headquarters, Mr. Annan told
reporters that all violations along the so-called
"blue line" separating Israel and Lebanon are over. He
says the way is now clear for the deployment of U-N
peacekeeping troops.
/// ANNAN ACT ///
I hope we will soon be able to deploy the troops
to the southern border. As you know, after the
Israelis withdrew they (U-N troops) have been
patrolling the area but have not actually
deployed to the border. I hope to see that done
in the next few days. What was holding us up is
that we wanted an end to all violations on the
blue line before we did (deploy). The violations
have all now been cleared.
/// END ACT ///
Mr. Annan says Lebanese army troops will also be
deployed alongside the peacekeepers and that U-N and
Lebanese commanders are now working out the logistics.
In June, the United Nations established the "blue
line" after Israel withdrew its troops from Lebanon.
However, there had been a number of alleged violations
of the line, on both sides. Diplomats hope that the
deployment of U-N troops on the border will discourage
further violations. (Signed)
