Lockheed Martin Coastal Systems Business Wins $11.5 Million Navy Contract to Upgrade Combat Systems

SYRACUSE, NY, June 29th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Syracuse (NE&SS-Syracuse) announced today that its Coastal Systems business in Manassas, Va., has won an $11.5 million contract to upgrade combat systems for the U.S. Navy's mine countermeasures vessels (MCM) and minehunter coastal vessels (MHC). The upgrade will replace existing equipment that is reaching the end of its service life with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment designed with an open architecture. As a result, the new design will result in lower life cycle costs and future upgrades to the combat system will be easier to accomplish whether they occur due to equipment obsolescence or needed insertion of new technology.

Raytheon Electronic Systems is the prime contractor for the project, worth a total of $26.4 million, and Lockheed Martin Coastal Systems is the subcontractor in this joint industry/government program. Raytheon is responsible for combat systems engineering, mine-hunting sonar and the mine neutralization system, while Lockheed Martin Coastal Systems is responsible for the navigation, command and control system and for the entire combat system integration, installation and test.

"This upgrade will bring the MCM and the MHC combat systems to a common configuration using modern technology," said senior vice-president, Ocean Systems Frank DeBritz. "They will have a common look and feel. This will provide a baseline the Navy needs to improve both the performance and maintainability of these platforms for the future."

Development work is under way currently with a completion goal of 2004, when production is expected to begin. All of the Lockheed Martin work will take place at Coastal Systems though NE&SS-Syracuse will supply the interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMS) for shipboard training.

A leader in ASW systems and sensors, minehunting systems, surface vessel and submarine electronic warfare, ground-based and airborne radar, and vessel traffic management, Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Syracuse serves customers including all branches of the U.S. armed forces, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Transportation and State, and defense and transportation departments of countries on six continents. NE&SS-Syracuse employs approximately 2,000 people and is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation.
