DATE=6/20/2000 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=U-S-SIERRA LEONE WAR CRIMES (L-O) NUMBER=2-263587 BYLINE=BRECK ARDERY DATELINE=UNITED NATIONS CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: The United States is calling for an international court to take jurisdiction over war crimes in the west African nation of Sierra Leone. Correspondent Breck Ardery reports from the United Nations. TEXT: Speaking to the U-N Security Council, U-S ambassador Richard Holbrooke said the rebel group in Sierra Leone, the Revolutionary United Front, should be subject to some form of international justice. /// HOLBROOKE ACT /// No mistake should be made about our government's attitude towards the leaders of the R-U-F who have created this terrible tragedy in Sierra Leone. We do not believe that Sierra Leone can have a peaceful and stable future until they are brought to justice. /// END ACT /// Mr. Holbrooke noted that the government of Sierra Leone has formally requested the United Nations to establish international jurisdiction for war crimes in Sierra Leone. The U-S ambassador said it may not be necessary to create a new tribunal but that some form of international prosecution of war crimes in Sierra Leone must be established soon. Although Mr. Holbrooke did not mention anyone by name, U-N observers say he was talking about prosecution of Foday Sankoh and other leaders of the Revolutionary United Front. Mr. Sankoh, who is accused of leading rebels to attack and kidnap U-N peacekeepers, remains in the custody of the Sierra Leone government.
