VOICED AT:
INTRO: At the United Nations today (Thursday), the
Secretary General's special representative for Congo-
Kinshasa, Kamel Morjane (mor jahn), said he has asked
the Security Council to consider additional means,
including more peacekeepers, to fulfill the U-N
mission in the war-torn country. Correspondent Barbara
Schoetzau reports from the United Nations.
TEXT: Mr. Morjane says extra peacekeepers will be
needed in Congo-Kinshasa, particularly in the northern
diamond center of Kisangani that has been the scene of
recent fighting between Rwandan and Ugandan troops.
//// MORJANE ACT ///
After certainly a lot of efforts made by the
Secretary General and other personalities in
order to make the two parties accept he
withdrawal, the disengagement in Kisangani, we
should not leave nay vacuum there. Any vacuum
could be very dangerous, especially for the
future of the whole process, not only for
Kisangani.
//// END ACT ////
Mr. Morjane says Kisangani could be the test case for
the ability of the United Nations to maintain peace in
Congo-Kinshasa. But he says the U-N mission will need
an additional battalion. A U-N battalion numbers
between 650 to 800 troops.
The Security Council has already authorized more than
55-hundred troops to monitor the cease fire but only
about 200 military observers have been
deployed.(Signed)
