VOICED AT:
INTRO: Eritrea says it has accepted an Organization of
African Unity ceasefire to end its border war with
Ethiopia. As VOA's Scott Stearns reports, Ethiopia is
expressing doubts about the declaration, saying that
Eritrea has attacked Ethiopian positions overnight.
TEXT: This is the ceasefire Eritrea has been waiting
for. Forced to pull back to its pre-war border by
Ethiopia's military offensive last month, Eritrea was
looking for a plan that compelled Ethiopia to withdraw
to its previous border as well.
This plan does that with provisions for an
international border commission to ultimately resolve
the dispute. Ethiopia says it wants to withdraw to
pre-war borders but cannot allow certain strategic
ground inside Eritrea to fall back into the hands of
an Eritrean army that could again attack Ethiopia.
Eritrea says the war will never end until all
Ethiopian troops leave all undisputed Eritrean
territory.
Ethiopia says it is still studying the O-A-U cease
fire plan but doubts Eritrea's seriousness because
Ethiopia says Eritrea attacked its positions overnight
on the war's western front. (SIGNED)
