Following is the text: (begin text) U.S. Department of State Office of the Spokesman Press Statement by Philip T. Reeker, Acting Spokesman June 7, 2000 Indonesia - U.S. To Provide Humanitarian Assistance in Aceh As Secretary Albright indicated on May 15 when she met with Indonesian Foreign Minister Shihab, we strongly support the "Humanitarian Pause" signed by the Indonesian Government and the leadership of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) on May 12. To that end, the United States will provide humanitarian aid to those communities in Aceh most affected by violence. Today, we are pleased to announce that a grant of $3 million will be awarded to "Save the Children" to work with Indonesian NGOs to improve the health of rural women and children in Aceh. This assistance project, which we hope will be one of many offered by the international community, demonstrates our commitment to help transform the humanitarian pause into a lasting peace and to begin to lay the foundation for a sustainable resolution to the conflict in Aceh. The United States supports Indonesia's territorial integrity and dialogue aimed at achieving justice and peace in Aceh within the context of a stable, united, and democratic Indonesia. We encourage all parties to seize the window of opportunity provided by the May 12 agreement and embark on a comprehensive political settlement that addresses the core grievances of the people in Aceh.
