Lockheed Martin, Cisco Form Alliance Focused On U.S. Government Market
BETHESDA, MD, May 31st, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) today announced a business alliance with Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) under which Lockheed Martin will incorporate Cisco"s commercial technology solutions into its U.S. government bids. "This alliance is a win-win for both companies and the U.S. government customers we serve," said Robert B. Coutts, Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin"s Systems Integration business area. "As our customers increasingly seek commercial off-the-shelf technologies for their complex systems requirements, this alliance enables Lockheed Martin to apply Cisco Systems" leading-edge networking solutions in our proposals to U.S. military and civil government agencies."

"Through this alliance, we are positioned to provide unparalleled integrated communications support for the warfighter and enhanced service to the citizen."
Under the alliance agreement, Cisco Systems and Lockheed Martin will work cooperatively to identify and pursue new business opportunities in the federal marketplace, principally involving systems integration and information technology service requirements. The companies will establish cross-functional business development and technology teams to focus their core competencies on existing and emerging opportunities, identify process improvements and exchange best practices. Lockheed Martin will concentrate initially on deployment of Cisco Systems products and technologies to support command and control, security, network interconnectivity, wide area network, network management and voice communications requirements.
Each of Lockheed Martin"s four principal business areas - aeronautics, space, systems integration and technology services - will have access to Cisco Systems technologies and products under terms of the alliance agreement. Systems Integration - with a customer base spanning all of the U.S. military services and civil government agencies including the Departments of Commerce, Justice, Transportation and Treasury - will lead the relationship. More than $18 billion of Lockheed Martin"s $25.5 billion in 1999 sales were to the U.S. government.
Lockheed Martin expects to immediately apply Cicso Systems" technologies in its role as lead systems integrator for the DD-21 Blue Team, Coutts said. Led by Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE:GD), the Blue Team is competing to develop and build the U.S. Navy"s next-generation land attack destroyer, designated DD-21.
"With its extensive shipboard systems integration and COTS technology requirements, DD-21 represents an ideal opportunity for Lockheed Martin to combine its world-class software and systems engineering expertise with Cisco Systems" networking and communications technologies to offer a sustainable advantage to the U.S. Navy," Coutts said.
For the U.S. Air Force"s Integrated Space Command and Control (ISC2) requirement, currently in competition, the Lockheed Martin-led team will utilize Cisco Systems commercial technologies to modernize the current battle management and command and control systems at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) facility at Cheyenne Mountain, CO. "If the Lockheed Martin team is selected, we will provide state-of-the-art management and technological solutions that will enable NORAD and the U.S. Space Command to successfully and efficiently meet all current and future missions," Coutts said.
