Two Aegis-Equipped Cruisers Successfully Complete Test Of Baseline 6 Phase 1 System In Prep For CEC Evaluations

MOORESTOWN, NJ, May 26th, 2000 -- Two U.S. Navy Aegis-equipped cruisers this past week successfully detected and engaged five "hostile" test targets, verifying the performance of the ships' upgraded Aegis weapon system - designated Baseline 6 Phase 1 by the U.S. Navy and the system's manufacturer, Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Moorestown. The tests were performed on May 17 to 21 at the Atlantic Fleet Weapons Test Facility near Puerto Rico and included the USS Hue City (CG 66) and USS Vicksburg (CG 69). The missile firings were part of the ongoing preparations for the Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) Technical Evaluation/Operational Evaluation tests scheduled for February and May, 2001 respectively. The Baseline 2.0 CEC System is integrated with the Baseline 6 Phase 1 Aegis System.

"The live missile firings follow two years of intense integration and test effort by the industry/Navy team associated with the introduction of CEC into the Aegis cruisers and validates the significant progress achieved since 1998," said Fred P. Moosally, NE&SS-Moorestown Vice President and General Manager. "It further ensures both the execution of the CEC Techeval/Opeval next year and subsequent deployment of CG 66 and CG 69 with the JFK Battle Group."

The target presentations included representative low-altitude and high-altitude threats, severe electronic countermeasure environments and engineering demonstration of the Engage on Remote (EOR) capability. The EOR capability allows one Aegis ship to engage, fire, and intercept a target solely utilizing the Aegis SPY fire control radar data from a second Aegis ship.

In addition to integrating the Baseline 2.0 CEC with the cruisers' Baseline 6 Phase I Aegis system, the system also includes the AN/UYQ-70 Aegis Display System (ADS) Mark 6. The AN/UYQ-70 ADS Mark 6 provides a technologically current, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS)/Windows® based display system with significantly improved capabilities to support the Aegis operators in managing the Navy's continuing increase in Aegis Weapon System capabilities. The AN/UYQ-70 Display equipment is developed and manufactured by Lockheed Martin NE&SS-Eagan with the ADS MK 6 application software developed as part of the Aegis Weapon System by Lockheed Martin NE&SS-Moorestown.

The Baseline 6 Phase I AWS is also utilized on the DDG 79 through DDG 84, which are in various stages of construction and delivery to the Navy. Both DDG 79 and DDG 80 have each completed their Baseline 6 Phase I ship and combat system test programs including their own successful, live SM-2 missile firings during their respective at sea ship trials earlier this year. DDG 81 and DDG 82 are presently completing their Baseline 6 Phase I ship and combat system test programs with live SM-2 missile firings scheduled later this year during their ship trials.

The DDG 79 through DDG 84 variant of Baseline 6 Phase I does not include the cruiser's CEC capability but does include the AN/UYQ-70 ADS Mark 6. CEC integration with the DDG 51 class is presently under development at LM NE&SS-Moorestown as part of the Baseline 6 Phase III AWS program scheduled for introduction on DDG 85 and beyond in 2001.

NE&SS-Moorestown is one of six major operating sites in the Lockheed Martin NE&SS business segment. NE&SS provides surface ship and submarine combat systems, antisubmarine warfare and ocean surveillance systems, missile launching systems, radar and sensor systems, ship systems integration services and other advanced systems and services to customers worldwide. It is the largest business organization in the Lockheed Martin Systems Integration business area.
