Lockheed Martin Delivers Ahead of Schedule Again
LONDON, ENGLAND, May 24th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin has successfully installed the third Tomahawk Weapon Control System onto the UK Submarine fleet. The latest system, installed on HMS Trafalgar, at the Devonport Royal Dockyard, passed its Harbour Acceptance Test one-week ahead of schedule. It is not the first time the Tomahawk system has been successfully installed early. The second system, installed on HMS Triumph, was also completed ahead of schedule by the Lockheed Martin-led team.
On completion of the project, John Upton, MoD Project Contract Manager for the Docking Period for HMS Trafalgar, commented " the industry team, led by Lockheed Martin, has done an excellent job in delivering this programme on time and to full specification." The next important phase is sea trials where Lockheed Martin will also provide key support before Trafalgar returns once again to fleet operations with her new update capability.
The $60M contract to install the Tomahawk Weapon Control System onto the Swiftsure and Trafalgar class submarines is held by Lockheed Martin Naval Electronic & Surveillance Systems in Manassas, Virginia, USA. Lockheed Martin UK Government Systems Ltd, Portsmouth, has also played a vital role equipping Royal Navy submarines with Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) capability. The company is responsible for the management of three UK subcontractors, namely, Strachan & Henshaw, Ultra Electronics and BAE SYSTEMS. The team also includes Litton-Marine in the US. In addition to managing the subcontractor team, Lockheed Martin is responsible for the full time technical liaison on site dealing with all aspects of the TLAM fit.
Lockheed Martin was also responsible for installing ahead of schedule the TLAM capability onto the nuclear-powered submarine HMS Splendid. The submarine went on to play a vital role firing Tomahawk missiles during the recent conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
In 1999, the hugely successful TLAM programme was named 'MoD PE Project of the Year'.
Lockheed Martin UK Government Systems has an excellent reputation for delivering complex systems integration projects. The company is also responsible for integration of the weapons system on the Royal Navy's new Merlin helicopter. This system is described as having an "awesome" capability to detect, hunt, locate and attack submarines.
