Boeing Member of Winning United Kingdom Missile Team

ST. LOUIS, May 16, 2000 -- Today's decision by the United Kingdom to equip Royal Air Force Eurofighters with the Meteor beyond-visual range air-to-air missile means that Boeing will be a member of the leading international team in air-to-air missile systems.

Boeing is the U.S. member of the Meteor team, which is led by the Anglo-French joint venture, Matra BAe Dynamics. Meteor is a ramjet-powered missile with advanced seeker technology that can fly at sustained high speeds, over long ranges and with great agility to defeat air-to-air threats.

"Today's announcement is good news for the Meteor team and good news for Boeing," said Mike Marks, vice president and general manager of Weapon Systems for Boeing Military Aircraft and Missile Systems. "We look forward to being a strong trans-Atlantic contributor to the Meteor program for the U.K and other customers around the world. Meteor represents another example of trans-Atlantic cooperation that we are pursuing to become a more global company."

Boeing will assist the Meteor team in aircraft-weapon systems integration, risk management and marketing activities in selected markets. Boeing will lead future sales efforts to U.S. customers for Meteor and Meteor-derived technology.

Approximately 20 Boeing engineers will begin work on the Meteor team; the potential Boeing share of the Meteor program is still being negotiated. Meteor could be integrated on more than 1,000 aircraft, creating potential revenues of up to $8 billion over the life of the program.

Matra BAe Dynamics is a 50-50 joint venture between BAE SYSTEMS and Aerospatiale Matra. Other partners on the Meteor team include Alenia Marconi Systems, a 50-50 joint venture between BAE SYSTEMS and Finmeccanica of Italy; LFK, the missiles division of Daimler Chrysler Aerospace of Germany; CASA of Spain; and Saab Dynamics of Sweden.
