Marine Corps Awards $7.5 Million Contract To Lockheed Martin NE&SS-Syracuse For TPS-59 Radar Upgrades

SYRACUSE, NY, May 8th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (NE&SS-Syracuse) today announced that it has been awarded $7.5 million in incremental funding from the U.S. Marine Corps for further upgrades to its AN/TPS-59(V)3 radar. Under Lockheed Martin's contract with the Marine Corps, which has a total value of $46.8 million, an Integrated Product Team will work with the Marine Corps and its supporting agencies to make multiple improvements in the radar. The upgrades are designed to lower the cost of owning the radar system, address issues of parts obsolescence and improve the radars' capabilities.

The Marine Corps owns 11 of the systems, which were built in Syracuse, and uses them for long-range missile and tactical air defense at U.S. locations and on Okinawa.

Basil Moncrief, the Marine Corps program manager said, "The finalization of this Marine Corps-Lockheed Martin contract was very important to us. We must keep the TPS-59(V)3 Radar at the highest possible level of readiness throughout the Fleet Marine Forces at all times; this new contract will allow us to do that. We're looking forward to a fast start on this effort, and in partnership with Lockheed and the Marine Corps TPS-59 depot in Barstow, Calif., we will ensure the Marine Corps' TPS-59 continues to be the preeminent long range radar available to operational commanders, and radar of choice for Theater Air and Missile Defense."

Work under the new contract will take place in Syracuse and be completed by March, 2001.

AN/TPS-59(V)3 was developed for the U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and the Marine Corps. It is the most cost-effective early warning, situational awareness and tactical missile defense radar currently available with successfully validated performance against ballistic missiles as well as air breathing threats such as airplanes. The radars are highly mobile and can be packed up and moved in an hour.

Earlier this year, NE&SS-Syracuse received a contract worth almost $59 million from the Marine Corps to improve AN/TPS-59 (V)2 radars for the Egyptian government.
