Lockheed Martin NE&SS-Syracuse Wins Contract For Further Upgrades To United Kingdom Radars

SYRACUSE, NY, May 2nd, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Syracuse (NE&SS-Syracuse) today announced that it has been awarded a contract in excess of $2.5 million from the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF) for continued upgrades to its FPS-117 radars. The transportable radars, situated at two remote sites in Scotland, are referred to by the RAF as Type 92, or T92 radar, and are early versions of the FPS-117 product line built in Syracuse. Trevor Turner, program manager of the RAF Reliability, Maintainability and Supportability (RMS) Upgrade Program, spoke at a 1999 radar users' conference hosted by NE&SS-Syracuse about the successful support programs in which they have participated. For example, each system received a new radar control and display system in the mid-1990's, followed by a program to upgrade the electronics equipment.

The FPS-117 is the world standard in long range 3-D air surveillance radars and is used by the U.S. and many of its NATO allies. Certified by NATO, there are more than 90 operational in 14 countries.

The new RAF contract will upgrade the electronics in the array, which is the main transmitter and receiver for the radar. While the design work will be done in Syracuse, the installation and integration will be completed in Scotland.

Director of Radar Product Support Ed Lane said, "We've been working with our customer to determine how we can fit these life-extending upgrades into their funding process. We've been able to leverage investments made in the production environment to deliver cost-effective upgrade solutions for our existing radar customers. Going forward, our approach will be toward open system architecture by utilizing more commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment."

The installation at the first site will be complete in August 2001 and the second site will be complete a month later.
