Lockheed Martin Delivers 150,000th PC Common Operating Environment Package To U.S. Air Force
OWEGO, NY, May 2nd, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Owego has delivered the 150,000th Microsoft® Personal Computer Common Operating Environment (PC COE) configured software package for the U.S. Air Force. This delivery marks significant progress toward providing the standard desktop configuration to the more than 300,000 available personal computers in worldwide operation by the U.S. Air Force. The PC COE is a set of Microsoft software that is made available to the U.S. Air Force through the Global Combat Support System - Air Force (GCSS-AF) Indefinite Delivery/ Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) Microsoft Enterprise agreement. This agreement allows the U.S. Air Force to purchase the PC COE software package in any quantity, whether the order is for 10 or 10,000 software users, and receive significant volume savings over standard General Services Administration (GSA) pricing. This enterprise agreement is also offered to Unified Combat Commands and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Several major PC COE purchases initiated through the GCSS-AF contract within the last few months accounted for achieving this milestone. These purchases included an order for 90,000 standard software packages with an estimated value of $17.3 million from the Air Combat Command (ACC) and an order from the U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) for 33,000 standard desktop seats valued at approximately $6 million.
"Through the GCSS-AF contract, Lockheed Martin facilitates the government's acquisition of information technology products. As a value added reseller of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software products for use by the Department of Defense, we provide a cost-effective method for the U.S. Air Force to modernize its current computer systems with standard software products," commented Steve Lubniewski, senior vice president, Systems Solutions.
The initial GCSS-AF information modernization contract, originally signed in 1996, is an umbrella program for modernizing, integrating and sustaining combat support information systems to be responsive to Air Force needs during wartime and peacetime. The 10-year program, with an initial contract value of $304 million and a projected potential value of $1.2 billion, is intended to leverage and integrate industry-standard and COTS software products for improved efficiency and cost effectiveness.
