VOICED AT:
INTRO: Ethiopia has agreed to attend peace talks over
its border war with neighboring Eritrea. But as
V-O-A's Scott Stearns reports from Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia says this does not mean fighting will stop.
TEXT: A government spokesperson says Ethiopia will
participate in Organization of African Unity proximity
talks, in Algeria next week. The O-A-U has been
trying to stop this latest round of fighting and has
gotten Eritrea to promise to withdraw from disputed
border areas.
While Ethiopian delegates will go to Algiers, the
government says peace talks will not interrupt its
military offensive inside Eritrea. Ethiopia says the
fighting will only stop when Eritrea has returned all
land occupied at the start of the border war two years
ago.
Ethiopia says it is making more progress on the war's
central front, with a ground and air attack capturing
the Eritrean towns of Forte and Senafe, 30 kilometers
inside Eritrea on the main road south from the
capital, Asmara. (Ethiopians also hold the road north
of Asmara.)
Eritrea says it is pulling troops back as part of the
peace process. Ethiopia says Eritrea's army is on the
run. (Signed)
