VOICED AT:
INTRO: In a late night (Wednesday) meeting the United
Nations Security Council approved an arms embargo
against both Ethiopia and Eritrea in an effort to
further pressure those African nations to end their
border war. VOA Correspondent Breck Ardery reports
from the United Nations.
TEXT: After many hours of closed-door consultations,
the Council finally agreed on terms for an arms
embargo against Ethiopia and Eritrea. The resolution,
which was approved unanimously, imposes an immediate
embargo on all arms shipments to the warring nations
and bans any technical assistance related to weapons.
The resolution was initiated by the United States and
co-sponsored by Bangladesh, Britain, Canada and the
Netherlands. After the vote, American representative
Nancy Soderberg expressed her satisfaction.
///Soderberg act///
We are very pleased that we had strong support in the
Council for this resolution. I think it sends an
unequivocal and strong message to the parties to bring
an end to this conflict, stop the fighting and finally
negotiate an end, a resolution to this (war).
///end act///
The final Security Council resolution was something of
a compromise worked out with Russia which did not want
an open-ended arms embargo. The resolution says the
embargo will expire in 12 months unless renewed by the
Council.
In addition to the arms embargo, the U-N resolution
also demands a reconvening of peace talks sponsored by
the Organization of African Unity. Those talks broke
down earlier this month and the war between Ethiopia
and Eritrea resumed last Friday. (Signed)
