(Praises Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Israel and the Philippines) (320)
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said in a statement late May 16
that "In a time of expanded peacekeeping missions, with crises raging
on several continents, it is vitally important for UN peacekeeping
operations to be on a sound financial footing."
Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Israel and the Philippines had earlier in
the day at the UN "indicated their willingness to assume a greater
financial responsibility for future peacekeeping costs," she said.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
OFFICE OF THE SPOKESMAN
May 16, 2000
STATEMENT BY SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE K. ALBRIGHT
REFORM OF THE UN PEACEKEEPING FINANCE SYSTEM
Today at the United Nations, several countries indicated their
willingness to assume a greater financial responsibility for future
peacekeeping costs. Helping to launch a discussion on broad reform of
the UN's peacekeeping finance system, these countries -- Cyprus,
Estonia, Hungary, Israel and the Philippines -- have stepped forward
to state their preparedness to pay a significantly larger share of UN
peacekeeping costs.
Through their actions, these countries are demonstrating their
commitment to UN peacekeeping, and their willingness to play a
leadership role in this vital area. For this, they should be
commended.
In a time of expanded peacekeeping missions, with crises raging on
several continents, it is vitally important for UN peacekeeping
operations to be on a sound financial footing. These five countries
deserve praise and credit for the example they have set by helping to
make this possible.
As we move forward in our effort to reform and revitalize the United
Nations, we will continue to look to these countries for their
leadership and foresight.
