VOICED AT:
INTRO: The United Nations Security Council has passed
a unanimous resolution (Friday night) strongly
condemning renewed fighting between Eritrea and
Ethiopia. Correspondent Barbara Schoetzau reports
from U-N headquarters.
TEXT: The resolution demands that Eritrea and
Ethiopia immediately halt all military actions,
refrain from further use of force and restart peace
talks.
Security Council members felt so strongly about making
a statement concerning the outbreak of hostilities
between Eritrea and Ethiopia that they worked
throughout the day (amid briefings on other topics) to
arrive at a resolution they could pass quickly pass.
British Ambassador Jeremy Greenstock says the Security
Council was determined to express its deep
dissatisfaction with the two countries' inability to
resolve their dispute peacefully.
/// GREENSTOCK ACT ///
The Council was unanimous in their judgment that
this was a senseless move, that the people of
the two countries needed a different decision
and a concentration on their economic
difficulties. So the words in the resolution do
strongly condemn what has happened, call for
action to bring the parties back to negotiations
under O-A U [Organization of African Unity]
auspices, and request the two parties to give a
reaction.
/// END ACT ///
The resolution also says the Security Council will
take immediate steps if Eritrea and Ethiopia continue
to fight. Ambassador Greenstock says the Security
Council has already scheduled a meeting for Monday,
and he expects an arms embargo against both countries
to top the agenda. (Signed)
