DATE=5/10/2000 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=HOSTAGE TALKS FAIL - S NUMBER=2-262173 BYLINE=AMY BICKERS DATELINE=MANILA CONTENT= VOICED AT: Eds: This updates the CR 2-262170 INTRO: Negotiators in the Philippines failed Wednesday to convince Muslim rebels to free two ailing Europeans, who are among 21 captives being held in the south of the country. Amy Bickers reports from Manila, on the developments in the more than two week old hostage crisis. TEXT: Islamic separatists and negotiators for the Philippines government did not agree on terms for the release of two sick captives held deep in the jungles of remote Jolo Island. It was the first direct contact between the two sides in the 18-day hostage crisis. Worries over Germany's Renate Wallert and Stephane Loisy of France are mounting. Doctor Nelsa Amin, who saw them last weekend, says they are both in serious condition, one with hypertension and the other with a suspected urinary tract infection. On Wednesday she tried to convince the rebels to let her examine the hostages again, but they refused. The negotiations were held in an undisclosed venue on Jolo island one-thousand kilometers south of Manila.
