Incident: The U.S. Embassy in Manila reported earlier today that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has declared a unilateral 48-hour ceasefire beginning tomorrow.

The announcement comes after a week of fighting in the southwestern quadrant of Mindanao between MILF and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) military units, following a breakdown in peace negotiation between the two sides last Sunday. In the meantime, there was one more bombing on the outskirts of General Santos city (Sarangani Province) by Muslim insurgents, and a retaliatory hand grenade attack against a Muslim school and mosque near Davao city.

The Embassy also reported that, as of today, clashes between MILF insurgents and government troops had generally died down, and that airports in General Santos (Buayan Airport) and Cotabato (Awang Airport) cities, notwithstanding previous media reporting, had now reopened for normal business. Road travel on most of the highways in the area also has resumed.
