GOVT INSTALLATIONS ATTACKED

Date Reported: Friday, May 05, 2000
Incident Type: SECURITY
Country: BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA

Incident: The daily Serambi (Banda Aceh) reported that six installations, five of which were government facilities, were subjected to grenade attacks. Five of the incidents took place in the district of Aceh Utara.

The first incident occurred in Dewantara Subdistrict shortly before 7 AM, when a grenade was thrown at a local military headquarters. The blast injured two personnel on duty who suffered shrapnel wounds.

The second incident occurred in the Lhokseumawe area at around 9:30 AM, when a grenade was thrown at a government agency behind the district chief's office. The blast destroyed the restrooms for the two facilities.

Fifteen minutes after the above incident, another explosion was heard, this time directed at a traffic control post near the entrance gateway to the city of Lhokseumawe. The post was unoccupied at the time, and there were no injuries.

Ten minutes later, unknown individuals threw a grenade near the district headquarters of the agricultural service and at a subdistrict headquarters. Both devices failed to explode and were later disarmed safely by a police team.

The above incidents happened after two earlier occurrences the previous evening at the Mobil Oil Indonesia (MOI), where grenades were thrown at a water pumping station in Matangkuli Subdistrict, and at a security post in Lhoksukon. It was the third night running that MOI facilities were attacked by insurgents. Until these latest incidents, nine MOI sites had either been fired on or burnt down by armed men wearing masks and striped fatigue uniforms.

In a separate event in the district, a police officer going on duty was slain as he left his quarters and walked to his post in the evening. Witnesses said he was killed by three armed individuals who shot him twice in the back.
