The president of Congo-Kinshasa and several other
African leaders have wrapped up a one-day summit in
Algeria to discuss ways of strengthening the cease-fire
in Congo.
The leaders issued a joint statement at the end of the
meeting Sunday urging the U-N Security Council to speed
up the deployment of 55-hundred U-N observers to monitor
the peace process in Congo.
The country's warring parties reaffirmed their
commitment to a cease-fire on April 14th, but reports of
continued fighting have prevented the U-N deployment.
President Laurent Kabila held Sunday's closed-door talks
with leaders from South Africa, Nigeria, Mozambique,
Zambia and Mali. Algerian President Abdelaziz
Bouteflika chaired the summit as the current head of the
Organization of African Unity.
Congo's rebels were not represented at Sunday's meeting
--the latest in a series of talks on Congo's war, which
broke out in 1998.
The war in Congo has drawn in troops from several
neighboring countries. Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe
support the government. Rwanda and Uganda back the
rebels.
