Lockheed Martin Conducts Successful Test Of ATACMS Block IA Missile
DALLAS, TX, April 11th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control - Dallas recently conducted a successful Full-Rate Production (FRP-4) test of the ATACMS Block IA Missile. The test validated the quality of the production line, demonstrated missile to launcher interface, bomblet pattern size and accuracy, performance of systems software, and evaluated thermal material. The missile was fired at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. All test objectives were met.
Ron Abott, vice president - Fire Support for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, said, "ATACMS has again proven it's one of the most dependable, responsive, accurate, all-weather deep-strike missiles in the world, and with each successful test we further validate those points."
ATACMS was the first tactical surface-to-surface missile ever fired in combat by the U.S. Army, when it was deployed in Operation Desert Storm. Production of the ATACMS was accelerated so that the missile could be used against high priority targets. Each Block IA has a reduced Antipersonnel/Antimateriel (AP/AM) payload and a GPS aided inertial navigation system to ensure accuracy and sufficient lethality to defeat high-priority and time critical targets, such as mobile launchers at depth.
Located in Dallas and Orlando, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control develops, manufactures and supports advanced combat, missile, rocket and space systems. The company is organized in seven program/mission areas: Strike Weapons, Air Defense, Anti-Armor, Fire Control and Sensors, Naval Munitions, Fire Support and Product Development.
