INCIDENTS IN ACEH
Date Reported: Wednesday, April 05, 2000
Incident Type: SECURITY
Country: BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA Incident: The daily Kompas (Jakarta) reported the following terrorist incidents in the troubled province of Aceh in the last few days: On April 4, two explosions shook the town of Jantho, district capital of Aceh Besar in northern Sumatra. The explosions caused extensive property damage, destroying the offices of the district chief and administration, and the local offices of the provincial legislature. There were no personnal injuries. The district has previously been known as a quiet area, undisturbed by the violent incidents that occurred elsewhere in Aceh. On the same day (April 4), a truck of the Police Mobile Brigade was ambushed by a small group of militants, estimated to number no more than four individuals. The ambush occurred on the road between Banda Aceh and Bandara Blangbintang, about four kilometers before Sultan Iskandarmuda Airport (which serves the provincial capital). The police truck was on its way to the airport to recover the remains of a pilgrim who died while making a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The militants attacked, firing wildly one round from a rocket launcher, which missed by a wide margin. The truck stopped, and the mobile police immediately engaged the attackers with gunfire of their own and undertook pursuit of the group. The police managed to run down and capture one attacker from whom they confiscated a pistol.
