Lockheed Martin Awarded Third Navy Common Cockpit Production Contract

OWEGO, NY, March 27th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Federal Systems has been awarded a $26 million Lot III production contract by the U.S. Navy for 13 Common Cockpit kits to be installed in the CH-60S Vertical Replenishment helicopters. This Lockheed Martin production contract brings the total number of aircraft kits ordered by the U.S. Navy to 32, with a total value of $70 million. "This award signifies the U.S. Navy's commitment to increase the number of aircraft with Common Cockpit technology which will minimize ownership costs and flight safety concerns for its rotor-wing aircraft fleet," commented Jim Hargrave, vice president, Helo Systems at Lockheed Martin Federal Systems.

The Common Cockpit, designed to provide an efficient solution that meets all operational needs, enables both the pilot and co-pilot to share workload through dual flight and mission instrumentation. The Common Cockpit kit includes electronic flight instrument displays, two 8 inch x 10 inch mission displays, two programmable keysets, a digital communications suite, two inertial navigation/global positioning satellite units, a mass memory unit, two flight management computers and the operational software.

Under this contract, Lockheed Martin will deliver the Common Cockpit kits to the U.S. Navy, who will in turn provide them as Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) to Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, the CH-60S aircraft manufacturer. The first three Common Cockpit kits were successfully delivered to the U.S. Navy, and the CH-60S first production aircraft flight, using the fully integrated Common Cockpit, occurred on January 27, 2000. The delivery schedule for the remaining Common Cockpit kits calls for one per month throughout 2000 and 2001. Future Common Cockpit production opportunities for the Navy include approximately 243 SH-60R Multi-Mission helicopters and about 237 CH-60S Vertical Replenishment helicopters.

A leader in providing advanced-technology products, services and systems integration solutions, Lockheed Martin Federal Systems serves defense, civil and commercial customers worldwide. Lockheed Martin Federal Systems employs about 3,800 employees at facilities in Owego, N.Y., Springfield, Va. and Portsmouth, United Kingdom and is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation.
