INTRO: The Israeli Army has reportedly presented
Prime Minister Ehud Barak with its plans to withdraw
from southern Lebanon by July of this year. V-O-A
Jerusalem Correspondent Meredith Buel has details.
TEXT: Israeli radio is reporting that Army Chief of
Staff Shaul Mofaz has presented Prime Minister Barak
with a detailed operational plan to pull out of
Lebanon by next July.
The prime minister has pledged to carry out the
withdrawal with or without a peace agreement with
Syria and Lebanon.
The plan reportedly outlines measures to protect
Israeli towns along the border and relocate military
outposts in southern Lebanon.
General Mofaz has expressed concerns about attacks
across the border by Hezbollah guerrillas in the
months following the redeployment.
Since 1985 Israel has maintained a 15-kilometer wide
buffer zone in south Lebanon to protect its northern
communities from guerrilla attacks.
Public pressure is growing in Israel to withdraw from
the zone where seven soldiers have been killed so far
this year. (Signed)
