INTRO: Israeli warplanes have raided suspected
guerrilla targets in southern Lebanon and pounded the
bases of radical Palestinian groups near the Syrian
border. As Correspondent Meredith Buel reports from
Jerusalem, the raids are the first since the Arab
League warned the Israeli government to stop such
attacks and resume peace negotiations.
TEXT: Two Israeli warplanes fired a total of eight
rockets at suspected Hezbollah guerrilla targets in
southern Lebanon.
A spokesman for the Israeli army confirmed the raids,
saying all planes returned safely. The raids followed
an assault on Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah guerrillas
in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli air force then fired more than 13-missiles
at Palestinian guerrilla bases in remote mountains
near the Syrian border.
It is not clear what prompted the raids on the
Palestinian groups, which oppose peace agreements
between Israel and Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the
attacks.
The air raids are the first since the Arab League
warned Israel to stop such strikes and resume peace
talks.
Israel has announced it will pull its soldiers out of
Lebanon by July and the Arab League says a unilateral
pull back could set off a new military conflict in the
Middle East. (SIGNED)
