INTRO: Reports say fighting between Afghanistan's
Taleban movement and opposition forces has continued
for the second straight day north of the capital,
Kabul. From neighboring Pakistan, VOA's Scott Anger
reports.
TEXT: Forces traded artillery and small arms fire
along the battle front on the Shomali Plains about 50
kilometers north of Kabul. News agencies report a
number of fighters from both sides have been killed
and wounded in two days of battles. There is no
independent confirmation on the exact number of
casualties.
Dr. Abdullah, a spokesman for the opposition alliance,
told Reuters news agency Taleban jet fighters bombed
positions near the stronghold of opposition commander
Ahmad Shah Masood in the Panjsher Valley.
The spokesman has also confirmed Taleban gains against
opposition fighters in a key northern district of
Afghanistan. Dr. Abdullah says two towns have fallen
to Taleban forces in recent days.
The fighting comes as the two sides are set to meet
Monday in Saudi Arabia at the request of the
Organization of Islamic Countries. (SIGNED)
