MILITARY COMMUNIQUÉ - NO. 02/2000
During the period between the 10th of January and the 3rd of February, 2000, the UNITA Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola "FALA" carried out the following military activities:
Province of Bie
- On the 10th of January 2000, the MPLA military unit located in the city of Chinguar was taken by storm. 23 enemy soldiers were killed and large quantities of lethal war materials captured
- On the 14th of January 2000, 15 MPLA anti-terror police were killed 12 kms north of Kamakupa.
- On the 15th of January 2000, the village of Muinha north of Kamakupa, was taken by storm. 29 MPLA soldiers were killed, 02 BMP-2 assault vehicles and 02 military trucks were destroyed. Large quantities of lethal war materials were captured.
- On the same date, an MPLA military truck was totally destroyed on the road between Kamakupa and Katabola. 18 enemy troops were killed and all their weapons were captured.
- On the same date, the MPLA military unit located at Chitangua, south of Kamakupa, was taken by storm. The enemy abandoned 08 of their dead men.
- On the 28th of January 2000, the command post of the MPLA 21st Brigade was attacked 11kms north of Nharea. 17 enemy soldiers were killed and 01 T-55 tank destroyed.
- On the 31st of January 2000, a column of the MPLA 20th Brigade was attacked between Nharea and Lubia. 15 MPLA troops were killed, 02 T-55 tanks and 03 military transport trucks were destroyed.
- On the same date, an MPLA battalion of the 21st Brigade was attacked in the area of Lubia. 09 MPLA troops were killed and 01 T-55 tank destroyed.
- On the same date, the MPLA 2nd battalion of the 2nd Regiment was dispersed in the area south of Nharea. The enemy abandoned 18 of their dead men.
- On the 1st of February 2000, an MPLA column of the 20th Brigade was again attacked between Lubia and Nharea. 11 enemy soldiers were killed and 01 T-55 tank was destroyed.
- On the 2nd of February 2000, a third attack on the MPLA's 20th Brigade took place west of Lubia. 19 MPLA troops were killed, 01 BMP-2 assault vehicle and 01 T-55 tank were destroyed.
Province of Huambo
- On the 10th of January 2000, the city of Alto Hama, north of the city of Huambo was taken by storm. 43 MPLA troops were killed and large quantities of lethal war materials were captured.
- On the 11th of January 2000, the MPLA advanced command post of the 5th Brigade based in Bimbe, was attacked. 09 MPLA soldiers including Major Mbunga, Chief of Engineers section of the Brigade and the Lieutenants August Hilario and Chegao Kalunga were killed.
- On the 13th of January 2000, the enemy forces which attempted to re-occupy the village of Alto-Hama were dispersed and left behind 10 of their dead colleagues.
- On the 14th of January 2000, the MPLA forces of the 5th Brigade were engaged and dispersed, 9kms southeast of Mungo. 14 MPLA troops were killed.
- An MPLA military unit which operated 20 kms northeast of Mungo was engaged by our forces and dispersed 07 of their dead soldiers were left behind.
- On the 24th of January 2000, an MPLA military unit was attacked between Katata and the bridge over the River Kalai. 06 enemy soldiers were killed.
Province of Benguela
- On the 25th of January 2000, the MPLA forces from the village of Balombo assassinated 57 and wounded 13 defenceless civilians in Maca Mombolo.
- On the same date an enemy company based in Cusseque was attacked. 09 MPLA soldiers were killed.
- On the 26th of January 2000, an MPLA military truck was attacked and destroyed on the road between Cubal and Caimbambo. 16 MPLA troops were killed.
- On the 31st of January 2000, an MPLA company of the 4th Battalion based in Cubal, was attacked in the area of Calei. 07 MPLA troops were killed including the 2nd Battalion Commander.
Province of Uige
- On the 13th of January 2000, the village of Caca Luiti was taken by storm. 22 MPLA soldiers of the 54th Group were killed.
- On the same date, the MPLA tactical group of the 54th Group which attempted to take the village of Lukunga was dispersed. 14 MPLA troops died.
- Also, on the 13th of January 2000, an MPLA force of the 5th Group was dispersed in Luengue. 08 enemy troops were killed.

- On the 14th of January 2000, one MPLA military unit was attacked 1 km from Negage. 08 enemy soldiers were killed, amongst them the Commander of a battery of 82m/m mortars.
- On the 16th of January 2000, an MPLA Battalion was dispersed 29kms northeast of Caiongo. 10 enemy soldiers were killed.
- On the 17th of January 2000, an enemy BMP-2 assault vehicle of the 5th Group was destroyed on the road between Alfandega and Sanza Pombo. All its 10 occupants were killed.
- On the 25th of January 2000, the enemy forces of the 5th Group which attempted to retake Macocola were engaged and dispersed. The enemy left behind 12 of their dead colleagues 12 kms from Sanza Pombo.
- On the same date, the enemy forces which attempted to retake Caca Luiti were engaged and dispersed. The enemy abandoned 07 of their dead soldiers.
- Still on the same date, the enemy forces of the 5th Group which persisted in re-taking Macocola were engaged and dispersed 28kms northeast of Sanza Pombo. 15 MPLA soldiers were killed.
- On the 27th of January 2000, the village of Purin northeast of the city of Negage was taken by storm. 37 MPLA soldiers were killed.
- On the same date, the city of Samba Caju was takenby storm. 28 MPLA soldiers were killed and 06 military trucks destroyed. A large quantity of lethal material was captured.
- On the 30th of January 2000, 02 enemy Battalions of the 54th Group was engaged and dispersed 5kms northeast of Lukunga. 21 MPLA soldiers were killed.
Province of Bengo
- On the 11th of January 2000, the MPLA forces of the 49th Regiment were attacked 10kms southeast of Pango/Aluquem. 16 MPLA soldiers were killed.
- On the 20th of January 2000, 02 MPLA military trucks travelling on the road Luanda/Dondo were attacked and destroyed, 7kms from the city of Viana. All the war material was destroyed.
- On the same date, 03 high voltage electricity pylons of the grid Cambambe Hidroelectric to Luanda were destroyed.
Province of Zaire
- On the 13th of January 2000, the village of Toto which was garrisoned by the MPLA's 3rd Battalion of the 85th Regiment, was taken by storm. 24 MPLA troops were killed.
- On the same date, 04 crude oil depots in Kinguila, southeast of Soyo were destroyed.
- On the 31st of January 2000, an MPLA military force was attacked between Mangue and Nzetu. 06 enemy troops were killed.
Province of Malange
- On the 11th of January 2000, the enemy 4th Battalion was attacked 13 kms southeast of Kambundi Katembo. The enemy left behind 10 of their dead colleagues.
- On the 26th of January 2000, an MPLA military truck on the road between Kapando and Cacuso was attacked and destroyed. 16 MPLA troops died, amongst the dead was Major Alberto Antoino Dembo, Commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 32nd Brigade.
Province of Kwanza Sul
- On the 14th of January 2000, the MPLA forces of the 12th Regiment who attempted to re-take Amboiva were dispersed. 26 enemy troops were killed and 01 military truck captured
- On the 26th of January 2000, the village of Conde was taken by storm. 21 enemy soldiers were killed.
- On the same date, the village of Aquepa was also taken by storm. 12 MPLA troops died.
Province of Lunda North
- On the 11th of January 2000, the village of Xa-Muteba was attacked. 18 MPLA soldiers were killed including the Commander of the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment.
- On the 12th of January 2000, an Ml-17 Helocopter- Registration No. H600 - was brought down 56 kms southeast of Luzamba. 30 MPLA troops of the 1st Regiment were killed.
- On the 13th of January 2000, a Cantanguese military force guarding the bridge of the River Kuango was dispersed. 12 of their men were killed, 03 82m/m mortars and a quantity of individual arms were captured.
- On the same date, an AN-12 aircraft was brought down west of Kafunfo. All its occupants including the crew were killed.
- On the 21st of January 2000, the village of Ferme Chikapa was taken by storm. 53 MPLA troops were killed, amongst the dead is an officer.
- On the 23rd of January 2000, an MPLA Battalion of the 46th Regiment which intended to retake the village of Ferme Chikapa was dispersed. 13 enemy soldiers were killed.
- On the 24th of January 2000, the MPLA forces were attacked 16 kms southeast of Xa'Muteba. 09 enemy troops were killed.
- On the 26th of January 2000, an MPLA military truck was attacked and destroyed 7kms from Maludi. 17 MPLA troops were killed.
- On the 2nd of February 2000, an MPLA military column was attacked on the road between Dundo and Lukapa. 10 enemy soldiers were killed and a military truck was destroyed.
Province of Lunda South
- On the 16th of January 2000, the 1st Battalion of Bravo Regiment was dispersed 15kms from Ndala. 11 enemy soldiers were killed.
- On the 31st of January 2000, an enemy column which was bringing supplies for the Alfa Regiment based in Cacolo was attacked on the road between Lungue and Mona Quimbundo. 16 MPLA troops were killed and 03 military trucks were destroyed.
Province of Moxico
- On the 10th of January 2000, an enemy force was engaged and dispersed on the road between Lewa and Lumeje. 06 policemen were killed including the Quartermasters Jose Chama and Joao Jorge Zeca.
- On the 16th of January 2000, 111 MPLA soldiers deserted from Kamgamba and returned to their villages of origin.
- On the 25th of January 2000, the MPLA force securing the road between Liangongo and Lewa was dispersed. 08 MPLA soldiers were killed.
- On the 26th of January 2000, the MPLA military barracks located in the district of Sakuiva in the Luxia area was dispersed. 11 enemy troops were killed.
Province of Kuando Kubango
- On the 26th of January 2000, an enemy force was attacked, 1km from Kaiundo. 13 MPLA troops died.
In summary:
During the period between the 10th of January 2000 and the 3rd of February 2000 the MPLA lost 882 men - dead.
