Country: BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA Incident: The weekly Serambi (Banda Aceh) reported two recent clashes between Indonesian security forces and AMM (Aceh Merdeka Movement) insurgents. The engagements took place in the districts of Aceh Utara and Bireuen. The first clash in Aceh Utara occurred when security forces surrounded a suspected AMM hideout in the early morning hours, and called upon the occupants to surrender. The security forces were met with a salvo of gunfire to which they replied in kind. After a firefight lasting a half hour, the insurgents broke through the security cordon and escaped, but hotly pursued by the security forces. In the ensuing gun battle that rolled through three villages, two insurgents were shot to death. The remainder of the insurgents escaped. The security forces recovered two handguns, a few rounds of ammunition, and several motorbikes. The second engagement occurred when a joint police and military raiding party on their way to attack an AMM hideout were themselves ambushed by some 14 guerrillas. Two unknown persons were shot to death in the encounter, which lasted a half hour. Security forces said the two were AMM insurgents. The remainder of the ambushed party escaped.
