VOICED AT:
INTRO: The United States has praised Indonesian
President Abdurrahman Wahid's decision to suspend the
country's former military chief from the cabinet.
From the State Department, V-O-A's Kyle King reports.
TEXT: The United States says it supports President
Wahid's determination to assert civilian control over
Indonesia's military leadership.
The President suspended General Wiranto from his
cabinet post as Security Affairs minister after he was
named by a panel investigating past human rights
abuses in East Timor.
State Department spokesman James Rubin called the
general's suspension a step forward for democracy in
Indonesia.
/// RUBIN ACT ///
This action reflects President Wahid's
government's intention to seriously address
charges against individuals alleged to be
responsible for human rights abuses in East
Timor.
/// END ACT ///
General Wiranto, the former head of the Indonesian
armed forces, has denied any responsibility for
atrocities committed in East Timor.
U-S officials call his suspension a significant step
toward the development of democracy and the rule of
law in Indonesia following decades of military rule.
