DATE=2/10/2000 TYPE=CORRESPONDENT REPORT TITLE=U-N / CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (L ONLY) NUMBER=2-259031 BYLINE=BRECK ARDERY DATELINE=UNITED NATIONS CONTENT= VOICED AT: INTRO: The United Nations Security Council took note today (Thursday) of the successful conclusion of an almost two-year-old peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic. V-O-A Correspondent Breck Ardery reports from the United Nations. TEXT: Security Council President Arnaldo Listre read a formal statement thanking the nations that have contributed troops to the mission in the Central African Republic. The mission was established in April of 1998 to assist in the implementation of an agreement that ended fighting between rebels and military forces loyal to Central African Republic President Ange-Felix Patasse. A recent report from U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan says that good progress has been made in the principal elements of that agreement, including political and economic reforms and restructuring of the armed forces. Although the peacekeeping troops will be leaving, Mr. Listre's statement pointed out that the United Nations will maintain a presence in the Central African Republic. Speaking through an English translator, Mr. Listre - Argentina's ambassador to the United Nations - described the establishment of a new U-N Peace- Building office there. /// Listre translator Act /// The Council notes with satisfaction that the office's principal mission will be to support the government's efforts to consolidate peace and national reconciliation, strengthen democratic institutions and facilitate the mobilization at the international level of political support and resources for national reconstruction and economic recovery in the Central African Republic. /// End Act /// The Security Council statement also urges donor nations to continue their assistance to the Central African Republic as it continues its economic reforms.(Signed) NEB/UN/BA/LSF/JP 10-Feb-2000 16:31 PM EDT (10-Feb-2000 2131 UTC) NNNN Source: Voice of America .
