VOICED AT:
INTRO: The United States and Britain say they support
a temporary lifting of the international ban on
airline flights into Serbia, but only as part of
tighter sanctions against the Belgrade government. V-
O-A's Kyle King has this report from the State
Department.
TEXT: U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and
British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook say they want to
support the democratic opposition in Serbia.
At a news conference following talks in Washington,
Secretary of State Albright said the United States
wanted to intensify sanctions that hit Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic and his supporters.
At the same time, Ms. Albright and Foreign Secretary
Cook said they were willing to support Serbian
opposition calls for a suspension of the flight ban.
/// Albright Act ///
We are prepared to consider support for
temporary suspension of the ban on flights by
European carriers into Yugoslavia as requested
by the opposition. But only if this step is
taken along with other measures to strengthen,
expand and focus those sanctions which most
effectively target the regime and its
supporters.
/// End Act ///
Foreign Secretary Cook said the purpose of the flight
ban suspension would be to show the people of
Yugoslavia that sanctions were not directed at them.
/// Cook Act ///
We, like the United States, are willing to look
at a suspension of the flight ban for a period
of six months, in order for the opposition to
demonstrate to the Serb people that we are
willing to listen to those who represent the
forces of democracy and the future within
Serbia.
/// End Act ///
In order to put more pressure on the Milosevic
government, Mr. Cook called for an extension of the
ban on visas for top Serb officials and supporters of
Mr. Milosevic.
Ms. Albright praised Serbian opposition leaders for
their recent cooperation and urged them to work more
closely together on common programs and candidate
lists.
Both Ms. Albright and Foreign Secretary Cook cited
this week's democratic elections in the former
Yugoslav republic of Croatia as an example of what
awaits Serbia if there is a democratic government.
